Somatic experiencing is a healing modality that focuses on perceived sensations in the body and involves tracking physical feelings the in the body.
SE is typically done in-person with a therapist during which a client tracks their own sensory experience, thereby releasing stored physical tension that results in the Autonomic Nervous System as an after-effect of trauma.
It was first introduced by Dr. Peter Levine in 1997, when he observed how animals in the wild recovered from life-threatening situations. His book Waking the Tiger observed how animals in the wild recovered from life-threatening situations, thereby avoiding traumatization. He uses the popular ‘Slinky’ video to demonstrate the prolonged effects of trauma on the body.
